NOTE: Customer shall install and utilize bulk liquid and bulk liquid nitrogen storage tanks. Using portable tanks for O2 or N2 will create additional chances of contamination entering the gas supply lines and the cutting head due to frequent tank changes. Contamination will cause cutting head lens failure and thus cause machine down time and additional operating expense.

The Piranha M-510 must be located in an area which has the following ambient conditions:

NOTE: Piranha requires that the laser and chiller remain on at all times to avoid costly damage from condensation.
LASER POWER SOURCE
The Piranha M510 Laser comes with an IPG 4.0 kW or 6.0 kW fiber laser resonator.
LASERMECH FIBERCUT 2D AUTO-FOCUS CUTTING HEAD
- The M510 4kW laser includes a LaserMech FiberMini auto-focus cutting head. An optional LaserMech FiberCut 2D auto-focus cutting head is also available.
- The M510 6kW laser includes the LaserMech FiberCut 2D auto-focus cutting head as standard.
Consumable kits are available which provide a starting stock of items that are recommended for a range of LASER cutting applications. These consist of nozzles and cover slides. There are a variety of nozzles available depending upon the type and thickness of material to be cut, and the cutting gas being used. Piranha recommends the following starter sets. Quantities may vary based on application.
NOTE: If a different combination of items is desired, please contact the sales department for a quotation specific to those items.
REMOTE CNC CONTROL STATION
The Remote CNC Control Station is located at the rear of the laser enclosure and includes dual monitors and a keyboard. The main CNC control screen and video feed is mirrored. This system allows for LASER operation when loading or unloading the pallets.
LAMINAR FLOW BOX
Piranha recommends an optics servicing area to be located away from manufacturing areas. This area must have minimum air movement and a dust free environment. For best results, we recommend purchase of a laminar flow box located in an office area.
NOTE: Optics contamination is the leading cause of premature cutting head failure. It is important that optics, such as cover slides, are changed in an extremely clean environment. This area will also be used for on-site cutting head maintenance (to be done by our technicians).
EXPLOSION RISKS ARISING FROM ALUMINUM CUTTING
Safe handling of aluminum dust is critical as detailed in the document from The Aluminum Association (www.aluminum.org) “Guidelines for Handling Aluminum Fines Generated During Various Aluminum Fabricating Operations” available online here. Even small amounts of aluminum dust hold potential for explosion and fire and Piranha strongly recommends the use of a separate dust collector, with deflagration (i.e. explosion) venting, for cutting aluminum.
Piranha suggests that you and your insurance provider review the pertinent NFPA standards prior to making any decision about aluminum dust collection and handling methods when cutting both aluminum and steel/stainless steel on the same machine. Pertinent NFPA standards include, but are not limited to, NFPA 484, NFPA 654 and NFPA 68.
It is the Buyer’s responsibility to be aware of all appropriate safety laws, regulations, and standards related to cutting explosive materials.
Safe manufacturing practices include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Aluminum dust should be collected in a separate dust collector specifically dedicated to aluminum.
- Dust should be removed from the collection pan on a daily basis
- The dust collector should have deflagration venting, and be located outdoors.
- The deflagration vent should be oriented in a direction so as to prevent damage to personnel and property.
Piranha cannot be held responsible for fires or explosions as a result of the ignition of aluminum dust from improper handling.
DUST COLLECTOR WITH DEFLAGRATION VENTING OPTION
A deflagration vent is a membrane panel that provides a dust collector wall that is weaker than the rest of the dust collector. In the event of aluminum dust causing an explosion, the force of the explosion will be directed primarily through the “weak” membrane panel. By orienting the dust collector appropriately, this will direct the force of an explosion in a known direction – one that will provide the lowest risk to personal injury or property damage consistent with NFPA 484. A “Spark Cooler” is also included in this package to reduce the probability of hot sparks reaching the dust collector thus mitigating the frequency of fire events.
IMPORTANT NOTE – PLEASE READ:
Aluminum, titanium, and other high strength light weight alloys present a higher risk of fire and explosion compared to steel and stainless steel alloys. Although the Spark Cooler will be effective at reducing the temperature of particles in the conveying duct, there is a potential for higher incidence of larger particles and lower ignition temperatures of the collected particles. As such, Piranha cannot guarantee that the device will be completely effective in eliminating sparks or fires in this application and has not performed specific analysis of this application. In addition, mixing of steel and aluminum on the same system/collector has the potential to produce a reaction that can cause the aluminum dust and iron oxide dust to ignite without a spark. This “thermite” reaction produces its own oxygen, and can be initiated without any external ignition source [Fe2O3 + 2 Al → 2 Fe + Al2O3 ]. The reaction is highly exothermic and will produce liquid iron at temperatures reaching up to 2500 °C with iron(III) oxide. A spark that doesn’t get extinguished prior to the collector with both steel and aluminum dust can also trigger the thermite reaction.
The customer is strongly recommended to undertake sufficient additional analysis, engineering, fire and explosion mitigation assessments to address these risks. Furthermore, as with any application, the Spark Cooler should not be used as a standalone device when any potential exists for explosion, or other catastrophic or serious injury, due to fire or explosion. In such applications, additional fire and explosion containment and suppression measures are critical.
ALUMINUM DUST COLLECTOR OPTIONS
The standard dust collector supplied with the machine is for mild steel and stainless steel cutting only. A dust collector with deflagration venting can be purchased as (1) a replacement of the standard dust collector or (2) as a second dust collector to be used with an integrated diverter system to allow switching between the units.
No special foundation is needed for the Piranha laser. Standard concrete floors of a minimum 150mm (6”) depth are recommended. Flatness should be within 12mm (0.5”). There should be no expansion joints, saw cuts, or cracks in the floor beneath the frame of the laser.
Installation is included with the purchase of a Piranha LASER. Buyer is required to complete all items on the Piranha pre-installation checklist prior to the dispatch of a service technician to begin installation. The pre-installation checklist will be provided to after the receipt of the purchase order for the Piranha LASER.
Training will take place at the time of installation and will cover the operation of the machine, best practices for programming and applications, and basic preventative maintenance. All programmers, shift operators, and maintenance personnel for the machine are asked to participate in this training.
Warranty period is one (1) year, except as otherwise noted. LASER resonator manufacturer’s warranty will be passed through to the customer, but in no event will be less than one (1) year.
Phone support will be provided for the life of the machine at no additional charge.
