Piranha PlateLASER: Heavy Duty Fiber LASER Cutting Head

The cutting head on the 12-kilowatt PlateLASER fiber LASER is a sealed unit. To handle 12,000 watts of CNC fiber LASER power, Whitney uses a reflective cutting head. Reflective cutting heads use specialty ground copper mirrors to replace the collimating and focusing lenses. Copper mirrors are internally cooled, allowing cooling to take place much more efficiently, eliminating prospective hot spots from contamination. With direct cooling, the mirror surface does not thermally distort. Transmissive optics, on the other hand, use lenses instead of mirrors. Lenses are cooled from the edges, yet the beam goes through the center of the lens. So when using high-power – 6,000 watt fiber LASER and above – even the slightest contamination within the beam cap on the a lens will create a hotspot, causing distortion of the lens and a resultant shift in the focal point. This in turn yields unacceptable fiber LASER cut quality or cutting head failure.

Piranha-Whitney’s state of the art fiber LASER cutting head for 6-kilowatt cutting is a shop-hardened cutting head that can be serviced onsite. Competitors cutting heads require expensive, off-site servicing. This can result in excessive downtime and logistics issues, as well as an expensive spare cutting head for backup.

Piranha-Whitney fiber LASER cutting heads include intelligence and monitoring. Built-in sensors within the cutting head monitor temperatures in all critical areas. This monitor is integrated into the CNC control, which will stop cutting if temperatures reach predefined levels.

Piranha PlateLASER: A Better Brain

The Piranha-Whitney 12-kilowatt fiber LASER is not only powerful, it’s also very smart. Whitney uses material parameter libraries, or MPLs, built into the CNC control. These MPLs control everything from peer cycles, to complex contouring geometry.

To change from one material type and thickness to another, you simply have to change the reference to the MPL. This feature helps maintain consistency from programmer to programmer and from operator to operator, since there are no databases connecting separate workstations. Your fiber LASER operators or your maintenance staff can get into different features of the control, depending upon their needs.

The fiber LASER CNC control also has remote diagnostics capabilities. With remote diagnostics, our service engineers here in Rockford Illinois can control your machine and see what’s going on. They can do any kind of software updates, maintenance, or checks that are required.

All together these features of the Piranha-Whitney fiber LASER CNC control make it versatile, easy to use, and easy to maintain. These are just a few of the features of the Piranha-Whitney 12-kilowatt PlateLASER fiber LASER.

Piranha Fiber LASER: Nitrogen Cutting Made Affordable

One of the big advantages of the Piranha-Whitney 12-kilowatt CNC fiber LASER cutting system is its ability to use nitrogen and cut a steel plate up to five eighths of an inch thick. When you cut with nitrogen, you eliminate the oxide edge that occurs when you cut with oxygen. This saves time by eliminating the downstream secondary operations required to clean that oxidation off the edges of cuts.

The 12-kilowatt fiber LASER cutting system can achieve speeds up to three times faster than what you can achieve with a 6-kilowatt fiber LASER cutting system. Piranha-Whitney has developed a cutting gas system that reduces the amount of nitrogen required when cutting with 12-kilowatts in a thick plate. This dramatically reduces the cost of fiber LASER operation and production on your parts.

Piranha PlateLASER: Rapid Pierce Cycle

When cutting thick plate with LASER, piercing through the material can take a lot of time. Piranha-Whitney has developed a rapid-pierce cycle to minimize the amount of heat and the time required to get the fiber LASER beam through the material before you start cutting.

There are two ways to cut thick plate with a LASER: One is to blast pierce through it with as much power as you can. This puts a lot of molten material on the surface of the plate and can compromise your fiber LASER cutting lens and your cover slides. The other way is to put low power into the plate for a long period of time. This can take up to 15 seconds in 1-inch plate and put a lot of heat into the material.

Piranha-Whitney’s Fiber LASER Rapid Pierce cycle is the world’s fastest controlled-pierce cycle. We can pierce a 1-inch plate in about two seconds and three quarter-inch plate in about .8 seconds. The heat goes into the ejected material, not into the plate, which means you can cut small holes in a thick plate and cut immediately after piercing.

These are just a few of the features of the Piranha-Whitney 12-kilowatt PlateLASER fiber LASER.

Piranha PlateLASER: High Tech Construction

Piranha-Whitney uses polymer granite instead of steel for our CNC fiber LASER machine bases. Polymer granite is heavier, more rigid, and most importantly, not susceptible to any kind of thermal changes. This makes our fiber LASER machines much more reliable and stable at the high speeds and accelerations that we can achieve. Instead of typical rack and pinion drive systems, Piranha-Whitney fiber LASERs use linear drive motors throughout the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis. When compared to rack and pinion systems, linear drive motors give you higher acceleration, faster positioning speeds, and lower maintenance requirements. The high cutting speeds achievable with the Piranha-Whitney 12-kilowatt fiber LASER means that your parts will be completed much more quickly, so it’s important to get the material in and out of the machine as quickly as possible. Standard Piranha-Whitney pallet designs only require 60 to 90 seconds to change one sheet of material to another. This means more parts on the floor at the end of the day with a Piranha-Whitney plate laser than with any other fiber laser on the market. The Piranha Whitney plate laser is a cantilever design machine, using high strength materials that are lightweight. This allows us to provide the highest acceleration and speed possible. Cantilever design also allows you to use a single drive motor. This simplifies maintenance and increases reliability of the system.
