Laser Welding for Mold & Die Repair

Laser welding concentrates energy into a very small, precise spot, creating a much smaller heat-affected zone than TIG welding. This minimizes thermal expansion and contraction around the repair area, reducing warping, cracking, and dimensional shifts—critical for maintaining tight tolerances on precision mold and die surfaces.

The MA1 Series can weld stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, and other non-ferrous alloys commonly found in mold and die construction. With 32 preset process parameters, operators can quickly switch between materials without extensive manual calibration, making it versatile for mixed-material tooling repairs.

Most operators can achieve professional-quality welds after just 1-2 hours of training. The MA1 Series features a 7-inch touchscreen with preset parameters and an intuitive interface, significantly shortening the learning curve compared to traditional welding methods that require years of skill development.

The MA1-65 model handles stainless steel up to 6.5mm thick, the MA1-45 up to 4.5mm, and the MA1-35 up to 3.5mm. Selecting the right model depends on the thickness of the mold or die section being repaired and the desired weld penetration.

Laser welding typically produces clean, smooth, flush welds with minimal spatter, significantly reducing the need for post-processing. This is especially valuable for mold surfaces where finish quality matters, though light polishing may still be needed depending on the cosmetic or functional requirements of the tooling surface.

Class IV laser welders require laser-safe eyewear rated for the specific wavelength, along with standard PPE like gloves and protective clothing. Piranha includes safety goggles with every laser unit purchased, and proper enclosure or shielding is recommended to protect bystanders from stray reflections during die and mold repair work.
