Clearance Guidance
Use material thickness and type to identify an appropriate punch-to-die relationship, helping support cleaner shear, manageable burrs, and reliable production results.
Use the Punch and Die Clearance Chart to make informed tooling decisions for cleaner holes, controlled burrs, and dependable punch performance. Piranha helps fabrication teams connect material thickness, material type, and tooling choices to practical production needs. Backed by deep ironworker and punch-tooling expertise, this resource supports more consistent results across everyday shop work and demanding, specification-driven applications.

Punch and die clearance is a foundational setup decision that influences edge condition, burr size, punching force, and tooling wear. A reliable chart gives operators a useful starting point, while material grade, thickness, hole geometry, and production requirements guide final adjustments. Piranha brings decades of fabrication knowledge to help shops align tooling and equipment choices with consistent, specification-focused output.

Piranha began in 1974 when Harry Oswald and Bob Brown developed an ironworker to streamline work at the foundry where they were employed. What started as a practical answer to a production challenge grew into a broad portfolio of metal fabrication and thermal cutting equipment. Today, Piranha carries forward more than 145 years of combined heritage through the Piranha, W.A. Whitney, and Bertsch brands. From its Illinois roots in Belvidere and Rockford, the company supports fabricators throughout all 50 states and North America. Its focus remains straightforward: help shops reduce downtime, improve repeatability, and scale production with equipment, tooling, parts, training, and knowledgeable support from a single source.
Punch and die clearance is the intentional gap between the outside of the punch and the opening of the die. During punching, that gap allows the material to fracture and separate. The right clearance helps create a clean edge with controlled burrs while limiting unnecessary punching force and tool stress. Clearance is typically selected in relation to material thickness and material characteristics.
